Healing with Poultices & Compresses
by Khana Dias

Barbara O’Neill has spent years sharing a wealth of natural remedies that support the body’s healing, using simple ingredients most people already have in their kitchens.
Author, Educator, Naturopath, and Nutritionist, also an international speaker on natural self-healing. She has raised eight children and is a specialist in women’s and children’s health. Barbara is passionate about good health and natural healing. She believes in giving the body optimum conditions in order for it to heal itself.
This video by Barbara O’Neill taught me how to use different poultices and other natural remedies, practices we’ve now incorporated for our family. When my son was in college, one of the weekends he came home feeling quite ill, we applied an onion poultice around his neck, gave him antibiotic sandwiches, and used a few other simple therapies I shared in a blog post HERE. Within just a few days, he was feeling much better, and back to college dorm life he went.

Here is a breakdown of Barbara's lecture

Discovering Good Health: "Poultices and Their Applications"
  • [00:26] What is a Poultice? A poultice is a moist mass of material, typically plant-based, that is applied to the body to relieve soreness and inflammation.
  • [01:07] Onion Poultices:
  1. Cooked Onion: Used for earaches and boils.
  2. Raw Onion: Can be used for respiratory issues and sore throats.
  • [10:12] Heating Compress for Sore Throats: A simple compress to help with a sore throat.
  • [11:09] Onion Syrup: A homemade remedy for coughs and colds.
  • [13:41] Internal Use: Garlic can be consumed as a natural antibiotic.
  • [14:14] "Antibiotic Sandwich" a way to consume raw garlic for its antibiotic properties. The sandwich is made with:
    A slice of sourdough toast
    Olive oil
A crushed clove of garlic, avocado and tomato slices on top. Enjoy!
  • [17:18] Flu Bomb: A potent mixture to combat cold and flu symptoms.
    • 1/8tsp chopped Ginger
      1 clove Garlic chopped
      1tsp Raw or local honey
      ½-1  lemon
      sprinkle of cayenne pepper
      1/3 cup of hot water.
  • [18:53] Cabbage Poultices: Used for swelling and inflammation.
  • [19:41] Ginger Poultices: Helpful for joint inflammation and back pain.
[25:08] Potato Poultices: A powerful anti-inflammatory poultice for various ailments. Great stories shared on how this helped with foot injury.
  • [33:26] Activated Charcoal Poultices: Used for drawing out poisons from bites and stings.
    • 1 part psyllium, 3 parts charcoal and enough water to make a soft jelly.
  • [41:37] Castor Oil Compresses: Can be used to break up lumps and adhesions.
  • [46:31] Cayenne Pepper:
  1. Internal Use: Can help with blood circulation and heart health.
  2. External Use: Can be used to stop bleeding and improve circulation in the feet.
  • [57:46] Slippery Elm:

One of my clients watched this video and did her own experimentation with caster oil. This is her testimonial:

"I am a 64 year old female with extreme bilateral fibrocystic disease of the breast. It was extremely painful to get my annual mammogram. Many times it left me in tears. I watched a video about castor oil compress by Barbara O’Neil use to minimize fibroids of the uterus. I wondered if it will work on my breasts.
So for 4 months 5 times a week I applied a castor oil compress to my left breast at night while sleeping 4-7 hrs.

I went to have my mammogram last month and to my surprise it did not hurt on my left side where I had been applying the compress. Not only did it not hurt, but the results showed less fibrocystic desire than my right breast. My left breast always showed more disease than my right. Also, my right breast showed no changes except a little denser.

I told my primary doctor what I had been doing, and she told me the improvement was because I was getting older. In the past, my left breast was extremely hard to the touch, now it is much softer. I am now applying the compress to both breasts, and we shall see what the results are next year after doing this for a year." Marsha
